Installation of 360 2009R2 on Itanium

Postby dg98adams » Wed Jan 20, 2010 8:24 am

I installed Tecplot 360 2009R2 on our systems, and the only install that does not work is the Itanium.

It looks like the Itanium version installed is not correct.

When I try to start it I get the following error message:

I choose this platform in the install:

10. | HP | Itanium | HPUX 11.0 or newer 64-bit Itanium

/app2/tecplot/linux.altix/360_2009R2/bin/tec360: line 609: /app2/tecplot/linux.altix/360_2009R2/bin/tecplot.shared: cannot execute binary file

I sent a request into Tecplot support, but have not heard back. Perhaps the version I downloaded was not correct?

file /app2/tecplot/linux.altix/360_2009R2/bin/tecplot.shared
tecplot.shared: ELF 64-bit MSB executable, IA-64 (Intel 64 bit architecture), version 1, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped

This looks like the correct install, but I think the SGI ALtix Itanium64 is not going to load.

Hi, the 2009 release only supports HP/UX Itanium, not Linux Itanium.

We will be adding Linux Itanium support back in the April timeframe - in fact, I'm trying to get a quote on the hardware as I type. It would be really helpful if you let me know which flavor/version of Linux you're using. (In the 2008 release, we had SUSE 10.1)

The 2008 Release 2 (11.3.29.563) version was the last one I had running on the
SGI Altix 4700 Itanium II machine. We have been running Tecplot on it (or those like it) for several years. Dropping the platform has had a significant impact on our users at the DoD level.

uname -a
Linux hawk-0 2.6.16.60-45.5.PTF.317714.1-default #1 SMP Mon Aug 24 09:41:41 UTC 2009 ia64 ia64 ia64 GNU/Linux

/etc/ more SuSE-release
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (ia64)
VERSION = 10
PATCHLEVEL = 2

April 2010.....ok

We don't usually install beta's, but I would be interested in doing it when ever you get around to it.

Any movement on adding the Itanium II support?

Yes - we just got the replacement hardware in house last week. I'm still working on the time frame for starting the work, but it's looking like early April. (My hope is to have it part of the 2010 release.)

I will have a "release candidate 0" of the Linux Itanium version is uploading now - it should be done 4pm PST today (19 March). It's passed our nightly plot exerciser and has had at least three people internally run through the installation, load various datasets, etc, so it should be pretty stable.

The 2010 (and 2009) releases use the Reprise License Manager. If you need it, I've included a link <a href="http://download.tecplot.com/2010preview">on the download page</a>. Otherwise, you should be able to point it to your existing license manager. (Or, I can send you a temporary key.)

Jim

(In light of <a href="http://www.tecplottalk.com/viewtopic.php?t=285">this recent discussion</a>, I should note that layouts created by 2010 are likely to exhibit issues if loaded in earlier versions because of all the work we've done with the fonts. Older layouts will load without problems.)

Jim,
I download the Itanium release, and installed it using the existing license manager for Tecplot.

And it appears to load normally, GREAT!!!! :D

I will go ahead a get the other Linux versions updated as well.

1 simple question...why 3 other 64-bit Linux downloads?
What's the difference?

64-bit linuxg27x64.26.tgz, linuxg248x64.26.tgz, linux64.26.tgz

The different Linux (x64) builds are intended to cover different Linux operating systems. For example, linux64.26, the oldest, is SUSE 9 SP4 (and is probably fine on the oldest RHEL 4) We've just added another one (linuxg29x64.26) to solve some aesthetic issues we've observed on SUSE 11.

Going forward, the Linux (and UNIX) distributions will be packaged together. The setup script will make a recommendation on which one is appropriate for your system. I'll be uploading that version today, so it'll be ready for you on Monday.

Ok, I had used the linux64.26.tar one, and it worked fine...

Thanks for your prompt answer.

We will get a new Cray machine in August, but it is x86-based so I will likely will use a newer version for whatever OS it comes with.

That took a lot less time than it normally does. There is now one giant Linux (and Mac and UNIX) tarball with all of the platforms. The setuptec script should choose the best match.

Is the Cray Itanium-based?

No the Cray is going to be Opteron based (x86). I think the machines is an XE6 but it's not built yet.

But this Itanium will be all we have for a while. that's why I was glad to see a new release put back in for it.
