Postby tuanmsu » Fri Mar 28, 2014 7:08 am

Hi Everyboydy!

I have a number of files with extension is *.plt and I'm trying to make a animation.

Is there any way to add a dynamic text showing a time?

I appreciate your helps in advanced.

Hello tuanmsu, it's easy to do what you ask.

Use the Tecplot menu: File > Load Data File(s) > Tecplot Data Loader > Data Loader dialog box

At the bottom of the Data Loader dialog box > please click the Multiple Files button > you may now select all your PLT files

To animate, use the Tecplot menu: Data > Edit Time Strands

Here is a detailed tutorial on time animation:

To show the dynamic solution time, add a text box and use this string: &(SOLUTIONTIME)

Hi Straton,

Thank you very much for your helps.

The issue I have been facing is *.plt files are not text file. These files were extracted from 3D tecplot file. I think it was saved as binary file. That's why I could not add text box as your hint.

Is there still any way to add solution time ?

Hello Tuanmsu,

The PLT files only contain the physical data, you will not be able to save the dynamic text inside the data file. If you need to have the dynamic text show up when you load the data file, I would recommend using a packaged layout file. File > Save Layout. Select Packaged Data from the drop down list. This will save the data and the frame information into a single binary file.

Actually, this is not entirely correct. As part of the *.plt binary format, a user can add auxiliary data records when the binary file is being constructed. If the data is 3D extracted data from Tecplot, a user could do the extractions to a zone, attach aux data to the zone, then output the entire data set to a binary file. The dynamic text is really stored in two segments; the metadata in text form is in the binary, while the function that generates the display is the &(auxzone[Q]:name) is in a layout or style sheet. Both are needed to generate the "dynamic text" as the binary has the text string and the &() construct places that text string.

Alternately, the layout can have commands that generate the aux data then plots it, but the data can be stored in a binary file.
